Women of Resistance & The Dusty Rebel | Artbook @ MoMA PS1
September 4, 2018

Saturday, September 29 3-5pm | Artbook @ MoMA PS1

Join the Coeditors of Women of Resistance, Danielle Barnhart & Iris Mahan in conversation with photographer, Daniel Albanese aka TheDustyRebel (whose photos of street art and protest are featured as the section breaks of the anthology) and special guest, street artist, Jilly Ballistic.

This will be a multimedia event, with projections of the photographer’s work, and poetry readings by Lauren Clark, Cynthia Dewi Oka, and Rosebud Ben Oni.

The conversation will focus on poetry & art as protest; why women/femme/queer artists take to the streets, and how this resistance shapes art and literary worlds (and the artists themselves). Panelists will explore how we reach our audiences despite issues of gender and myriad intersecting identities that define us as “other,” and the beauty & communities created from resistance.

Daniel “Dusty” Albanese is a New York City-based photographer and filmmaker behind the website TheDustyRebel. Shaped by his background in anthropology, he has built a worldwide following documenting the more marginal aspects of the urban landscape, as well as controversial artworks, political protests, and city living. In 2017, he began production on his first feature length documentary and book exploring the global Queer Street Art movement. http://www.thedustyrebel.com/

Jilly Ballistic may be considered New York City’s leading subway vandal. Over the last five years, she has used hundreds of stations, train cars and advertisements to shine a light on the startling evolution of Chemical Warfare over the last century and our contemporary political climate. With paper, adhesive and historical photographs, all public space can be used to provoke, inspire and stimulate thought. Ballistic has been featured in numerous street art documentaries (“Wild in the Streets,” Dega Films), television series (Canal+) and international culture magazines—from AnimalNY, BuzzFeed, Hyperallergic, HUCK and BUST; Time Out New York has declared her work to be one of the best underground (issue 843). Her work and process is also documented in three major book publications, “Outdoor Gallery: New York City,” “2Create” (both by Yoav Litvin) and “Women Street Artists: The Complete Guide” (Xavier Tapies, Graffito Press). https://www.flickr.com/photos/jillyballistic/
